GNU Shogi 1.1—1.10E English patch
For those who don’t read Japanese (or Chinese), learning
the pieces can be an obstacle to learning Shogi. New
players should be able to concentrate on learning Shogi
strategy, rather than learning to recognize the pieces.
The simplest solution is to play with a gaijin set, with
the English names marked on the pieces—(K)ing, (G)old,
(S)ilver, k(N)ight, (L)ance, (P)awn, (R)ook, (B)ishop,
with promoted pieces marked +.
*Observant people will notice that the letters magically
retain their orientation when the pieces are rotated. I
thought this would be easier to use than a more realistic
set. If you disagree, either change the icons yourself or
write to me and I’ll make you a new set.
This patch will create such a set for GNU Shogi 1.1—
Mac 1.10E. The resources are included in this text file
(there is also a slightly more detailed set of instructions
in the TEXT/styl resource pair 4096).
Just open this file and (a copy of) the GNU Shogi
application in ResEdit, select all resources from this
file, copy them, paste them into the application, save it,
and you're done.
Feel free to distribute this patch at will, in any form, as
long as all resources are included. Distributing the patched
application may violate the license conditions of the
application; if not, feel free to do so.
If you have any questions, comments, insults, favorite
quotes from “Better Off Dead,” or any idea what Skinny
Puppy is singing toward the end of “Assimilate,” please
